My name is Kelsey, and I’m addicted to desserts. You heard that right, folks! This Registered Dietitian has a MAJOR sweet tooth. Here’s the thing – I believe in a healthy relationship with food and body. I also believe in a realistic, well-balanced diet where all foods fit. So while I will post (and eat) real-sugar, full-fat desserts, I also think it’s smart to make some better-for-you desserts when the opportunity allows. That way you can have your cake and eat it too!
This skinny apple pie crisp is a perfect example of that. While you could use real brown sugar and add a stick of butter for richness, odds are you will enjoy this recipe without those things anyway! It’s a great way to use up apples that have been sitting in your fruit bowl a little too long and create a dessert that the whole family will enjoy.
In this recipe, I use my salt-free, sugar-free Gingerbread spice blend from my spice company – The Spice Girl Kitchen. I’m biased because it is, after all, my spice recipe and the best salt-free, sugar-free Gingerbread seasoning on the market. But you can always swap this for plain cinnamon or come up with a Gingerbread spice blend at home!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Easy Prep
This recipe only takes about 10 minutes to throw together. It’s perfect if you have a bunch of apples lying around that might have been out for a little too long.
Feeds A Crowd
This Skinny Apple Crisp is perfect for a girl’s night or any gathering you may be hosting. I also love making this for just my husband and me as a dessert for the week! Serve it with ice cream and I know your kids will love it too. OR you can double it and bring it to your next holiday potluck!
Light In Calories
Per serving, this recipe is only 277 calories (8 g of fat, 60 g of carbs, 2.5 g of protein). While it is still relatively carb-dominant, it certainly is a lighter version compared to other apple desserts. You can serve it with a light whipped cream (like cool-whip) or a better-for-you ice cream brand (like Halo Top)!
Ingredient Deep Dive
Apples
The best apple type to use depends on your personal preference. But there are certain apple types that I recommend because of their flavor (sweetness), texture, and ability to hold up during cooking. You can choose between granny smith apples, Honeycrisp apples, or Fuji apples. Any of these options will work well in your apple crisp and are widely available at most grocery stores!
Truvia Brown Sugar
Using Truvia brown sugar instead of regular brown sugar is one of the main ways to make your apple crisp lighter on calories. For example, 1 cup of regular brown sugar contains 830 calories, while 1 cup of Truvia brown sugar contains 420 calories. Half the calories for the same flavor!
Maple Syrup
For the best result, I recommend using real maple syrup (not the corn syrup version). How do you know what’s “real maple syrup” and what’s not? Simply check the ingredients on the label. The only thing that should be listed is “maple syrup”.
The Spice Girl Kitchen Gingerbread Spice
This ingredient is important to giving your apple crisp that little extra something. That unexpected twist! Plus, it’s the best (but I’m biased). Shop the gingerbread spice here!
Equipment Needs
Slow Cooker
Trust me, a slow cooker is a need in your kitchen! They are so versatile, easy to use, and allow you to experiment with set-it-and-forget-it recipes! Most slow cooker recipes only take a few minutes to throw together and don’t require much attention (if any) while it cooks.
I recommend this 1.5-quart slow cooker (it’s only $15!) if you have limited kitchen storage and/or are cooking for 1-2 people. If you are cooking for a family, I recommend this affordable 7-quart slow cooker (it’s currently on sale for $30!), or upgrade to this more advanced 7-quart slow cooker with a timer that auto-warms once the time is up!
No matter what slow cooker you use, I recommend buying these slow cooker liners to make clean-up a breeze!
