This post is all about Easy Greek Salad Recipe.
History of Greek Salad
Greek salad, also known as “Horiatiki” in Greek, is a staple dish that has been around for centuries.
It features fresh ingredients commonly found in the Mediterranean region and typically consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, green bell peppers, Kalamata olives, and feta cheese (an authentic Greek salad doesn’t contain lettuce!). The salad is dressed with a simple combination of lemon juice, red wine vinegar, salt & spices, and extra virgin olive oil, which is a vital component of Greek cuisine.
The combination of vegetables, olives, and cheese in Greek salad represents the agricultural abundance of the region. This staple dish is recognized internationally as a healthy and delicious dish. In many parts of the world, variations of Greek salad have been created, often including additional ingredients like lettuce, capers, or different types of cheese.
Nutrition Breakdown
Greek salad is VERY nutrient-dense, but it is not a complete meal. At the very least, it would need a protein added. You could do that by adding chicken, shrimp, fish, or chickpeas to the salad itself OR by serving this salad as part of a larger, more complete meal.
Either way, here is the nutritional breakdown of this salad:
- 21 grams of fat per serving (from the olive oil, olives & feta cheese)
- 4 grams of fiber per serving (hellooooo veggies)
- 4.4 grams of protein (this may surprise some of you!)
When it comes to micronutrients, this salad is a powerhouse. The various veggies and fresh ingredients pack vitamin C, B vitamins, antioxidants, potassium, monounsaturated fats, Vitamin E, calcium, and more!
Equipment Needs
This recipe requires minimal equipment – just another reason to love it! You will only need:
