  • Using a hand or stand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed for about 2-3 minutes, until smooth and creamy.
  • Gradually add in the powdered sugar. Mix on low speed to prevent a sugar cloud. Once incorporated, increase to medium speed and beat until combined.
  • Add milk/cream, vanilla, and salt. Mix until smooth. Adjust the consistency as needed, adding more milk for a thinner texture or more powdered sugar for a thicker one.

Storing and Freezing Buttercream

Extra buttercream? (Lucky you!) Here’s how to keep it fresh:
  • Storage: Buttercream can be kept at room temperature for up to a day, in the fridge for a week, or frozen for up to three months.
  • Reviving Stored Buttercream: After it’s been chilled, let it sit at room temperature, then give it a quick whip to get that fluffy texture back.
